3-Dec-2004

Dear family,

'Thank you' to each one who prayed for our safety. A typhoon in the dark is a scary thing. You hear so many crashes and wonder what is coming down next. In the light of the morning we saw that God had protected nearly every building on the Bagabag Center -- huge trees downed, but neatly lying alongside structures and homes. Minor damage to the end of the library, but no books got wet. One personal dwelling had a limb punch through their roof, but no one hurt. And our house had one piece of roofing lifted away. We gave special thanks to the Lord as we walked around to the east side and saw that a lovely 60-foot pine tree and gone over and just missed the south east corner of our house. Just a few degrees more to the west and it would have struck us. PTL!

The very penetrating sound of chain saws is in my hearing as I type this thank-you note to all of you. It's quite bright, looking out our windows. This is because of two things: the loss of so many limbs on our shade trees and the many tons of leaves that are no longer on these same trees. One sad loss for us is the many orchids plants around our place that were damaged or destroyed. ...  But we are reminded that we had a storm like this in July last year, not long after we got back from furlough. It was not too many months after that before it was hard to see evidence that such violence had come through Bagabag. God is in the business of growing beauty.

Well, I need to get back to the clean up. There's lots of mopping to do since a great deal water came in through the closed windows. Jalousie windows -- most common here -- are not very good at keeping rain at 100+ mph from spraying into the room. Even so, it could have been a lot worse. PTL!

Thanks for being there,

Leon & Sally
