Mississippi Trip - Day 2

After some much-needed sleep, the team was treated to a great breakfast at Bayou Talla Fellowship (BTF) in Kiln, MS. This church has been gracious enough to allow Samaritan's Purse to use its facilities for as long as it needs to while helping the communities here.

The first responsibility we had for the day was to clean the church. This required cleaning the eating areas, bathrooms and the special shower trailer provided by Samaritan's Purse.

Then it was time to get ready to visit the work site. We collected the necessary tools and got ready to head out to Bay St. Louis. Brian and Jeff here are getting fully prepped for "take off."
We went to this house to finish cleaning out the mold-infested walls and floors so that reconstruction can begin. The water level around this house was up to the tops of the doors at one point. We were required remove the remainder of what was in the house, no matter what condition. The rubbish was tossed into a gigantic heap by the roadside for FEMA to collect.

This required the entire team to don full body Tyvek suits, goggles and N95 dust masks to prevent inhaling and coming in contact with the mold.

The team got right to work (after lunch, of course). A previous team had removed most of the items from the house. We were to remove the rest of the items. This included appliances filled with unknown contents that had not been opened since the hurricane. We also needed to clear the back four rooms of moldy sheetrock and carpets. At 5:00, we went back to BTF for showers, BBQ pork ribs and a time of sharing. Afterward, some folks remained in the sanctuary for singing and fellowship.
Clara was also moved by God to share her gift of massage with the entire camp. As a pair of welcoming hands grabbed your shoulders, you were greeted with the introduction: "Hi, I'm Clara from New Hampshire. I'm a licensed massage therapist. God made you special, so sit up straight!"
