Mississippi Trip
- Day 3
| Today we
returned to Roxanne's house that we began working on yesterday. She
told us that she lived in this house since she was three years old.
Aside from losing almost everything in the hurricane, she has also
been through tremendous tragedy in her family. Her husband passed
away just a few weeks ago and she has had several other close
friends and family facing serious illness. She, her son, and her
mother currently live behind the house in a couple of FEMA trailers
(see picture).
Today we got a real opportunity to hear
her story, to talk to and encourage her. She is a very giving
person. She has a heart for both animals and people. Up until the
hurricane, she would regularly feed and/or house up to 12 people in
her three-bedroom home. This was because she and her mother would
find people in the neighborhood in need of assistance. She also took
in animals, of which several are still in her backyard. |

 |
| During the
hurricane she lost a couple of beloved dogs and her husband's horse.
Today she was going to a job interview and we had the opportunity to
pray with her as a group. At the end of the day, we signed a
Samaritan's Purse Bible to present to her. |

 |
| Today's work
entailed completing the demolition and cleaning of the house. We
removed the remaining sheetrock and paneling, cleaned the debris,
swept the floors and sprayed and scrubbed the studs with a Clorox
solution. |

 |
| In his zeal for
demolition work, Brian smashed an overhead light with his wrecking
bar and lacerated his neck with a shard of glass, proving that you
really should "check before you wreck." (Brian will be
presented with the Purple Heart for bravery on his next mission
trip.) |
 |
| When we removed
the paneling from one of the walls, we found some unwelcome guests
that were drawn to the water damaged walls.

|
 |
| On
the trip home, we passed several heavily damaged houses and
buildings. One was like a house right out of "The Wizard of Oz."
Another was a gas station that was almost completely leveled. There
are still many businesses that are not up and running, especially
supermarkets. |
